Local telcos to bear coat-of-arms

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 NOVEMBER - Instead of having to rely on singular colours, local telecommunications providers (otherwise known as telcos) will be required to present a coat-of-arms for identification and branding purposes. The Registrar of Societies has attributed this recent change to the shortage of singular colours as well as the rise of the number of telcos in recent years.

“After a meeting with the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture, as well as the captains of the telecommunications industry, we have decided to do away with telcos hogging all the primary colours,” said Rizal Kamaleh, a spokesperson for the Registrar of Societies. “We foresee the number of telcos in the country to be increasing in the near future, and because of this, we’re taking pre-emptive measures to reduce future collective confusion amongst brands in the country.”

For many years, telcos have been designated primary singular colours without issues because of their relatively small number. However, the introduction of newer corporations such as Packet One has been said to cause some manner of chaos amongst members of the public.

“Yalah, last time it was so easy to differentiate between one telco and another,” said Kamarudin, a resident of Kuala Lumpur. “But now, when I walk into a phone shop and ask for prepaid credit from the green telco, the shop people look at me and ask me, ‘Which green one?’ Susah betul, you know!”

Local telcos such as DiGi, Celcom, Maxis and U-Mobile have previously claimed the colours of yellow, blue, green and orange respectively as their own. Mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) such as Hotlink and Tune Talk will not be exempted from this recent development either, as both companies have been known to utilize the colour red.

“Yes, we are aware of these companies having their own logos and all that,” Rizal went on to say, after a reporter mentioned telcos to already have their own distinctive logos for identification. “However, at the present moment, these logos only make use of one general colour at a time, as opposed to at least a minimum of three different ones at the same time.”

“This changes things a little bit,” Packet One CEO, Michael Lai was quoted as saying over the phone. “Nevertheless, I think we’re up to the challenge. I’ve already asked my art team to come up with a design, and we’re kind of close on the final product. A green dragon breathing fire into telephone wires over a purple horizon should do quite alright, don’t you think?” Michael said cheerfully.

The coat-of-arms isn’t the only thing that telcos will need to adhere to. Corporations will also be required to carry banners displaying their coat-of-arms when conducting events such as roadshows, promotions and the weekly castle-storming of rival telco headquarters.
